This is the family home to the Black's and now belongs to Sirius. After his death, it is unclear who it belongs to but it seems that it will still be used as the Headquearters of the Order of the Phoenix.

The Black's were an old pure-blood family and Mrs Black's portrait still remains in the enterance hall as she placed a Permanent sticking charm to it. It is a very unpleasant portrait that screams abuse about the comings and goings in her house. She is usually hid behind a curtain but the doorbell tends to wake her portrait up.

12 Grimmauld Place is unplottable and you can only find it if you have been invited in by the secret keeper, who is Dumbledore. The house has a house-elf, Kreacher who was left there for ten years with only the portrait to keep him company of Mrs Black. All Kreacher's relatives have their head shrunken and mounted on plaques up the staircase. Kreacher lives under the boiler in the house, where he has stolen as many artefacts as he can, to prevent them from been thrown out.

It is a very large house with many rooms that have been cleaned up now that the Order's Headquarters are there.

Sirius left the Black family house at age 16 because he did not like their pure-blood attitude. An unremovable family tree in the drawing room shows that all the pure-bloods are inter-related and that Draco's mother, Narcissa, is Sirius's cousin, as well as Azkaban-escaped Death eater, Bellatrix Lestrange, who killed Sirius. Arthur Weasley is also Sirius' second cousin once removed. All those who did not live up to the Noble name of Black were blasted off the tapestry.

The house must have been very rich in its heyday when Sirius' parents were alive. They had their own family crest on the silver and the Black motto was "Toujours pur."

More recently, the house has been very busy with the comings and going of the Order and the meetings have been held there.

However, they are no longer using it because of the death of Sirius, as Dumbledore was afraid that the Death Eaters may be able to find the location through Kreacher. Harry was left 12 Grimmauld Place in Sirius' will, and with it, is now master of Kreacher. Mad-Eye Moody placed spells their to protect Snape from revealing its location. These include a tongue-tying curse, and a figure of Dumbledore that attacks intruders unless it is told that was not killed by them.

Harry, Ron and Hermione stayed there when they first fled The Burrow, and the place was turned around into a friendly hosue when Kreacher finally accepted Harry as his master.
